11 October has been marked by the UN as the International Day of the Girl. It aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. We, at Arab Vision, are very much in favour of empowering girls in the Arab World.

Sahar comes from a village where girls are married off early. She was clever at school and wanted to go to university. But the father sold his youngest daughter to a procurer, and she was married to an older man, an alcoholic, who used her as a doll to play with. Sahar was divorced after several months and had to return home to do the cleaning and cooking. She was not allowed to finish her education, because her father didn’t have the funds to let her study. Her little brother had to study.
