Satellite TV encrypted in Algeria

Satellite TV channels have become very popular in Algeria over the last few years.  However, the main digital station packages are now encrypted, leaving the Algerian viewers with very few alternatives.

Whether it's Arabic soaps, cartoons for children, live sports matches, latest films, or news and documentary channels, Algerians have been getting their 'free' share through their satellite dishes and decoders.  The state TV channels offer little in comparison.  The problem now is that these digital stations have introduced a new encryption system which, so far, is not possible to hack into or decode.  This is causing much frustration and dismay to the millions of Algerian viewers who are feeling the big void and the lack of alternatives.

This development has two ramifications for Christian satellite TV programs being beamed into Algeria.  These channels are not encrypted, so it is quite feasible that more viewers will turn to them now that they have much less options available.  But in the long run, there is also the issue of satellite censorship and restrictions in the pipeline, as well as a campaign by the Algerian government to push for the removal of the satellite dishes for aesthetic reasons: they clutter walls and rooftops.
